You are currently browsing the tag archive for the ‘captain planet’ tag.

Check the last two installments on feminist and ability blogs.

So after some searching and a lot of procrastination, here’s the next installment on good blogs around the interwebz.

carnal nationCarnal Nation is an online magazine that features regular columns and a multimedia page.  You can subscribe to their homepage (“recent news”) that features stories like Woman Catches Robber, Keeps Him as Sex Slave, Australia Buzzing About Drug Store Vibrators, and Lend a Hand: The 2009 San Francisco Masturbate-a-thon.

The blog’s tagline, “always steamin’” appears to be literal: her team of writers have a steady flow of entries like Iowa National Guard will boot married gays; former drill sergeant — don’t let them near the guns and Did you hear the one about Gov. Paterson? He’s BLIND. Ha! Ha! Ha ha ha … throughout the day.

Dr. Petra takes on sex from both a legislative and relationship stance.  Her most recent post, Sexual rights for all – sign the petition! gives links to the petition and resource materials for the 15 and Counting campaign for Planned Parenthood.

  • Polymorphous Perversitysexuality • gender • law • policy • feminism • LGBT • censorship • sex work • civil rights • reproductive freedom • privacy • BDSM • family law • pornography • sexual health • sex education • discrimination • speech • marriage • international law • transgender • religion • culture.

Whew.  But with that kind of tag, how can you not be compelled to check it out?  If you need an intro link, I suggest The bathroom canard lives on.

It seems geared for a younger (by that I mean teenager-ish) crowd and this is more of a site than a blog, but they do have a good forum to which you can subscribe.  Their current front page is directed towards “boyfriends”, which gives it a slightly yucky feel, but has good articles such as Genderpalooza! A Sex & Gender Primer and Hey, Boyfriend! Male Reproductive Choices.

Who doesn’t love Planned Parenthood?  Well, nevermind.  This blog is a great resource for news on sexual health and education.  It’s got some good national news and will at least keep you up to date with what day (National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers) or month (Sexual Assault Awareness Month) it is.

  • Sexual Intelligence: Sex — and culture, politics, the media — and Sex, by Dr. Marty Klein.

Don’t be put off by an old, white guy with letters after his name telling you about sex.  He’s smart, funny and a great writer about modern manifestations of lingering issues.  Check out the posts Belgium Declares Pope Public Enemy and Florida Now Safe for Goats & Jesus.  See youtube interview with him above.

The title is so condensed, you don’t need a tagline.  It has near daily updates on what’s going on around the country, such as It’s prom season, and the ACLU is ready with advice on same-sex dates and On 100th day, failing marks for Obama on gay issues?

You’re not going to go around searching for sex blogs without running into Cara’s writings.  Her blog is absolutely great and was featured in one of my previous blog roundups on feminism.  Check out her latest post, Cis Supremacy, Feminism and Women’s Shelters.

This is the third of a series that attempts to bridge disciplinary gaps between causes. No matter your cause of choice, or whichever blogs you follow, these issues are relevant.  The goal is to bridge dialogues and trade out “special” to “common” interest.

Captain Planet-style.

Know a blog that would be a good tenth?  Have a reason why one of these doesn’t belong with the rest?  Leave a comment!

See previous entry on recommended Feminst blogs.

I may be biased.  My first foray into Crip or Ableist Theory, apart from a childhood volunteer job playing with kids with autism, was Robert McRuer’s Crip Theory.  The book specifically looks at intersections of sexuality and ability.  For that reason, I may have a pre-conceived notion that this academic and political discipline is naturally inclined towards a diverse activism from which the others (feminist, critical race) have historically strayed.

Forgive my ignorance.

The 3 blogs below, however, support my optimistic fantasy.  (Score one for me!)

Dancers arent just bodies; we are people whose brains and tastes add as much to our movement vocabulary as our abilities.

"Dancers aren't just bodies; we are people..."

  • Biodiverse Resistance. A blog started in 2007 that’s updated every couple days.  To quote the blog description:

In defence of biodiversity in all its forms, liberty, equality and the freedom to be different. Working for a society in which hierarchies, whether based on class, gender, (dis)ability, race, money or power are abolished, food and energy sources are ecologically sustainable, and all people are recognised and accepted for who and what they are.

ThisAbility writer, Aaron, believes House's parking spot bet raises issues in a good way.

Great, no?  The article on choosing care-rs in Mass was my introduction to the blog.

  • ThisAbility is and awesome blog off of ThisMagazine.  I’ve been a subscriber for a few months now, and thoroughly enjoy reading the articles.  The main contributor is Aaron Broverman, who writes awesome editorials on a somewhat weekly basis.  Excellent and intelligent writing.
  • Wheelchair Dancer is a beautiful blog based on movement and politics.  The posts can be substantial in size, but never lack substance that is relevant and thought-provoking.  The riff on the Homeowner’s Association and Free Speech is a good entry post.

This is the second of a series that attempts to bridge disciplinary gaps between causes.  No matter your cause of choice, these issues are relevant and useful.  The sooner we can collectively recognize this hierarchical system, the sooner we can join forces to and brainstorm ways to overcome.

Cheers:  Yes Means Yes. The blog is amazing.  Well-written and even funny (yes, feminists can be funny), it’s endorsed by not only Bitch magazine, but also Ms., and Jean Kilbourne.  My personal introductory post was, Wipe Your Shame-Cave, Honey.

Jeers:  Rihanna not being proactive, and for staying with Chris Brown while he pleads not guilty to bashing her face in.  What time period does this kid think she’s in?  Does she not know she’s a MEGA-SUPERSTAR who’s endorsing public domestic violence?

*note comment below*

Cheers:  Rage Against the Manchine. This blog has a great personality.  Each post conveys a wickedly intelligent message, done in a natural, pedestrian jargon that makes it accessible.  They’ve got potential to be a bit lengthy, but they’re bound to get a reaction from you, whether it be rooting for or against her.  Just check out some of the comments on her about page.  Excellent.  And you know what else?  This is the only person who hates sports in the same way I do.  How can I not write a love post?

Jeers:  Sarah Palin. Two reasons why:

  • She’s an idiot wielding substantial power, at least in name.
  • She’s been mercilessly, relentlessly attacked for things ranging from her failure as a mother to her clothes.  You can’t tell me that other (male) presidential candidates have both perfect familes and shop at Goodwill while campaigning.

I feel almost compelled to say, “poor thing…”, but then I catch myself.

Cheers:  The Curvature. She’s got Anti-Feminist Bingo Cards to go along with her amazingly comprehensive and well-organized links.  What can I say?  I have sidebar envy.  Apart from that, however, she’s got amazingly written posts with really great info.  I particularly like how the article, “Observe and Report: It Gets Worse.  Much Worse.” has an “asshole” tag.

Jeers:  Emily Bazelon’s disappearing Twitter feed. I’m a huge fan of Slate’s Political Gabfest.  Recently they were talking about Emily’s truancy on her twitter feed.  I went to check it out, and it’s missing.  WTF, EMILY!  At least let me follow your non-existent posts!

By our powers combined, WE ARE CAPTAIN PLANET!

By our powers combined, WE ARE CAPTAIN PLANET!

In an attempt to bridge disciplinary gaps between causes, consider this feminist round-up of cool and not-so-cool goings-on the first of a series.  No matter your cause of choice, these issues are relevant and useful.  Oppression is oppression.  The sooner we can collectively recognize this hierarchical system, the sooner we can join forces to and brainstorm ways to overcome.

Captain Planet-style.

And who doesn’t like Captain Planet?
